Philip Richard, P.Eng., BEMP, LEED AP BD+C

Giuliano Todesco, CET, CEM, LEEP AP

Description
Low Energy Buildings – No Gimmicks, Just Good Design. The main focus of this presentation is on the basics of design as the industry seems to have forgotten the basics. The presentation will cover the building energy end-uses to remind the audience which are the end-uses that contribute to the largest percentages of energy use, the chronic issues that plague the industry in contradiction to the guidelines from 90.1 such as too high WWR, not meeting the maximum allowed fan power limitations, the importance of recognizing thermal bridging and others. The presentation will address the discrepancy between design intent and real world performance.
Presenter's Background
Paula Kerr, P. Eng. C.EngPaula is a Mechanical Discipline Lead in the Buildings Engineering Group at Stantec in Ottawa. Paula graduated from the University of Limerick, Ireland in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. One of her distinctions is a wealth of international experience in mechanical design from Canada, Ireland, and the UK. Over her 13 year career, Paula has held design, project management and senior leadership roles, working in a variety of projects in both design of new construction and complex renovations and retrofits. These projects include large-scale commercial developments, educational institutions, laboratories, recreational complexes and multi-family residential developments with various sustainable goals including the Living Building Challenge, Net Zero Energy and LEED Gold and Platinum certification. She has a personal and professional commitment to sustainable, cost-effective mechanical design with a focus of reducing energy consumption, whilst ensuring systems are also simple and easy to maintain and operate. She is a registered Professional Engineer in Alberta, BC and Ontario and a Chartered Engineer in Ireland.

Philip Richard, P.Eng., BEMP, LEED AP BD+CPhil Richard is a senior energy management consultant with the Mechanical and Electrical Group of Stantec Consulting's Ottawa office. He has 10 years of experience in sustainable design with primary focus on energy models, LEED® facilitation, energy audits, Life Cycle Cost (LCC) analysis, and mechanical design. His energy modeling experience includes; parametric studies comparing a diverse range of high performance, HVAC design solutions using energy modeling software programs including IES VE, eQuest, VisDOE, HAP, TRACE, EE Wizard, Design Builder, and EE4. In the last year Philip completed four large carbon neutral studies on behalf of BGIS for federal government buildings in the capital region including Library & Archives, John G. Diefenbaker, East Memorial Building and St. Andrews Tower. Finally, Phil is a registered LEED AP with a BD+C specialty, is also listed in the CaGBC list of approved modelers to perform 3 rd Party energy model reviews and finally, holds an ASHRAE Building Energy Modelling Professional (BEMP) designation.

Giuliano Todesco, CET, CEM, LEEP APGiuliano Todesco is a senior energy management consultant with the Mechanical and Electrical Group of Stantec Consulting's Ottawa office. He has more than 30 years’ experience in energy efficiency, energy modeling, energy auditing and energy research. He additionally has a solid knowledge of current energy codes such as the National Energy Code for Buildings and ASHRAE Standard 90.1 and is familiar with simulation tools including EE4 and eQuest. Finally, he has written articles in the ASHRAE Journal on the subject of low energy buildings and integrated building design (IBD), contributed to chapters in Low Energy Design Handbooks and has his own website on low energy buildings which can be found at www.lowenergybuildings.ca and www.lowenergybuildings.com.
