Wastewater Energy Transfer

Climate change is one of the most serious challenges facing the world today. Buildings
are one of the largest contributors to global warming accounting for almost 30% of all
CO2 emissions in North America. One of the best low carbon energy options available to
help buildings reduce CO2 emissions is Wastewater Energy Transfer (“WET”).

Stephen Condie is Chief Operating Officer at Noventa Energy.  He began his career at Enwave in 2003 as a Project Manager.  In 2008, he was promoted to Manager of System Operations with responsibility for the steam and chilled water systems.  He went on to hold progressively senior positions, culminating in Vice President of Engineering and Innovation, where he oversaw all capital projects from the research and budgeting phase through to construction and commissioning.  This included the capital improvements to the Pearl Street Steam Plant that made it the most efficient facility of its kind in the world – as recognized by the IDEA.

In 2011, Steve co-founded Magnolia Energy Corporation to focus on developing innovative renewable energy technologies that could improve district energy systems.   He later rebranded the business as Magnolia Generation to focus on providing clients with a zero-capital cost solution for life safety and sustained occupancy power.  Magnolia’s first completed project received recognition as the first multi unit residential building to meet the City of Toronto’s new Sustained Occupancy guidelines.

Steve has a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Waterloo.

Tech Session

Understanding psychrometrics

Understanding psychrometrics is at the heart of HVAC comfort.  It is utterly impossible to discuss comfort without a thorough knowledge of psychrometrics.  Joel will explain the psychrometrics chart, and walk through examples of calculations using the chart. If you work in HVAC, and you don’t master psychrometrics, do not miss this presentation… you will leave this technical session with a much, much improved understanding of how air, temperature, water and energy work together.

Joel Primeau, P.Eng., ing, HBDP, LEED AP, Chief Mechanical Engineer, J.L.Richards and Associates

Joel brings over 30 years of experience in HVAC in design, facilities management, project management, equipment sales and, training.  He is one of the two developers of the very popular HVAC Design Essentials Courses I and II, offered by ASHRAE. He brings an energetic and fun approach to teaching HVAC.
